Understanding Flickering Lights: Causes and Solutions

Have you noticed a flickering light in your home or business? What can you do for flickering lights? Flickering lights can be a nuisance but can also indicate a more serious electrical issue. It’s essential to understand the causes of flickering lights, the potential solutions, and when to call a professional Minnesota electrician.

Various factors can cause flashing lights, and pinpointing the exact reason may require some troubleshooting. We will go over some common reasons for blinking lights.

Loose or Poor Connections

Loose connections at the light bulb, fixture, or electrical wiring can cause intermittent contact, resulting in flickering lights. Bad connections can happen due to wear and tear, inadequate installation, or vibrations.

Faulty Light Bulbs

Flickering may occur if the light bulb itself is faulty. A faulty bulb could be due to the bulb nearing the end of its lifespan, having a loose filament, or being incompatible with the fixture or voltage. To determine if the bulb is the cause, trying a different one can be helpful.

Voltage Fluctuations

Electrical systems are designed to deliver steady voltage to the lights. However, fluctuations caused by various factors, such as high-demand appliances or faulty wiring, can lead to flickering. These fluctuations often require diagnosis by a professional electrician.

Overloaded Circuits

When circuits are overloaded with too many appliances or fixtures drawing power simultaneously, it can strain the electrical system and result in flickering lights. It may be necessary to balance the electrical load or upgrade the circuit to prevent this issue.

Aging Electrical Systems

Flickering lights can indicate broader electrical issues, especially in older homes with outdated electrical systems or worn-out wiring. In such cases, it may be necessary to consult a licensed electrician who can inspect and address the underlying problems.

How to Troubleshoot Flickering Lights

Always remember safety should be your top priority. Before attempting any troubleshooting, make sure to turn off the power to the affected circuit at the circuit breaker. If you need more clarification or are uncomfortable with electrical work, it is best to seek assistance from a trusted professional electrician.

Check the Light Bulb

We must say this twice to ensure it’s the first thing to check. Begin by checking the light bulb is securely screwed in and seated correctly in the socket. If you find that the bulb is loose, tighten it and observe if the flickering ceases. If the problem persists, consider replacing the bulb with a new one to eliminate the possibility of a faulty bulb.

Inspect The Connections

To inspect the connections, start by turning off the power to the affected light fixture from the circuit breaker. If you need help with this, call an electrician you can trust. Then, carefully remove the fixture cover and inspect the wiring connections. Check for any loose or corroded connections. If you find any, tighten the screws or wire nuts accordingly. Additionally, make sure to clean any corrosion if present. Make sure the wiring is securely connected and insulated.

Assess the Light Switch

Sometimes You may have a faulty light switch. Other times Incompatibility between the light fixture and the dimmer switch can cause flickering. If you experience flickering with a dimmable light fixture, it is important to check the compatibility between the bulb, fixture, and dimmer switch. Make sure that the dimmer switch is specifically designed and rated for the type of bulb you are using (e.g., use an LED dimmer for LED bulbs). If necessary, replace the dimmer switch with a compatible one.

Check for Overloaded Circuits

Excessive electrical load on a circuit can cause flickering. To verify if the flickering occurs when multiple appliances or fixtures are in use simultaneously, consider checking if redistributing the load by plugging devices into different outlets resolves the issue. If the problem persists, consider upgrading the circuit to handle the load more effectively.

Investigate Voltage Fluctuations

Fluctuations in voltage can cause flickering lights. Monitor the flickering to see if it coincides with other electrical appliances turning on or off. If so, contact a qualified electrician to inspect and assess the electrical system for any issues.

Time For A New Light Fixture?

If a light fixture consistently flickers or dims, even after changing the bulb and checking the wiring connections, it could indicate a problem with the fixture itself. In such cases, replacing the light fixture with a new one may be necessary. If your existing light fixture is outdated, worn, or no longer matches the aesthetics of the space, consider installing a new one that better aligns with your preferences and decor.

Some older light fixtures may not be compatible with newer, energy-efficient bulbs such as LEDs. If you are looking to transition to energy-efficient lighting or if your current fixture does not support the desired bulb type, it may be necessary to install a new fixture. If you need to enhance the functionality of your lighting, such as adding dimming capabilities, motion sensors, or other advanced features, installing a new light fixture that supports these features can be a practical solution.

If your light has physical damage, such as cracks, dents, or corrosion, it can compromise the functionality and safety of a light fixture. If the damage is beyond repair or poses potential hazards, it is wise to replace the fixture entirely. In certain situations, it may be necessary to replace a light fixture to comply with Minnesota safety codes or regulations. This is particularly important if the fixture poses fire risks, lacks proper grounding, or fails to meet electrical safety standards.

When to Seek Professional Electrical Help

If you’ve ruled out these simple fixes and your lights continue to flicker, it may be time to call in a Minnesota electrician. Flickering lights can sometimes indicate more serious issues, such as faulty wiring or outdated electrical panels. These problems require professional expertise to diagnose and resolve safely.

We had Accredited Electric out to do a very small job for us, but then also asked them to install a new set of lights on the front of our house. They were wonderful to work with! Heather was very pleasant when I called them and requested an appointment to get some under cabinet lighting fixed. She called back promptly when she could verify the appointment, and was very upfront about pricing, and her information was spot on. Our electrician was Josh, and he called before getting to our house to make sure we were available and at home. He was very pleasant, knew what he was doing, and was great to work with. Would definitely recommend Accredited Electric, and will call them back for any future electrical work.

Have the nicest people fixed a bunch of stuff and installed a bunch of things. Cleaned up, was respectful. Even adjusted stuff for me. I don't know a soul out here but I am glad I know them. Quality work and a fair price.
